Lesson 6 Pastoral Epistles (Part 8)

1 Timothy 6:19-21

1 Timothy 6:19 KJV 1900

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

“laying up in store for themselves…”

Careful where you lay up those stores:

Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900

Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

There is one thing that is certain, ETERNITY:

Luke 12:33 KJV 1900

Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

We must not trust in uncertain riches!

Now consider:

“…a good foundation…”

Where is that foundation to be found, in the Lord:

Luke 6:48–49 KJV 1900

He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Where is that foundation to be found, in love:

Ephesians 3:17 KJV 1900

That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Where is that foundation to be found, in understanding and knowing the Lord:

Jeremiah 9:23–24 KJV 1900

Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Neither let the mighty man glory in his might, Let not the rich man glory in his riches:

But let him that glorieth glory in this, That he understandeth and knoweth me, That I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: For in these things I delight, saith the Lord.

Next, consider the time that is important:

“…against the time to come…”

The time to come is ETERNITY:

1 Timothy 6:7 KJV 1900

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

Departure from TIME is certain:

James 1:9–11 KJV 1900

Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:

But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.

For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

In ETERNITY comes the Judgment Seat of Christ:

2 Corinthians 5:10–11 KJV 1900

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

Then consider what we are to lay hold on:

“…that they man lay hold on…”

Hold on to our blessed hope:

Titus 2:13 KJV 1900

Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

This is a LIVING hope:

1 Peter 1:3–5 KJV 1900

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,

Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Moving on we see:

1 Timothy 6:20 KJV 1900

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:

Paul addresses the call:

“…O Timothy…”

The addressee is:

Paul speaks directly to Timothy!

Warning that has been delivered to him:

1 Timothy 6:11 KJV 1900

But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

Order for direct action for Timothy to take:

2 Timothy 2:1 KJV 1900

Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

Furthermore:

“…keep that which is committed to thy trust…”

Faithful stewardship is required:

1 Peter 4:10 KJV 1900

As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV 1900

Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

The TRUST given:

1 Timothy 1:11 KJV 1900

According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

The glorious gospel must be delivered in its purity:

Galatians 1:6–7 KJV 1900

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:

Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.

The glorious gospel is SOUND Gospel:

2 Timothy 1:13–14 KJV 1900

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.

That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.

The glorious gospel is a FAITHFUL Gospel:

Titus 1:9 KJV 1900

Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

Staying true to the words of God is how we show our Love for the Savior:

John 14:23 KJV 1900

Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.

What we are to avoid:

“…avoiding profane and vain babblings…”

Words of no profit:

“Babblings” are nothing but “hot air!”

For example:

1 Timothy 4:7 KJV 1900

But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.

How do we avoid:

2 Timothy 3:14–17 KJV 1900

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Furthermore:

“…and oppositions of science falsely so called…”

This is the world’s wisdom:

1 Corinthians 3:19 KJV 1900

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

Strikes at the heart of educated!

“science falsely so called”

Shows they called that science which is not science!

“…science..” missing from most new bibles, replaced by “knowledge”!

What’s their problem:

Dislike their “god” being called false!

Now look at:

1 Timothy 6:21 KJV 1900

Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.

Path to error:

“Which some professing have erred concerning the faith…”

Who have erred:

“Some” those that put science in front of God’s words!”

Where is the true knowledge:

Begins with “the fear of the Lord”:

Psalm 111:10 KJV 1900

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: A good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endureth for ever.

Found in the Savior:

Colossians 2:3 KJV 1900

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

No knowledge outside of the Savior:

Colossians 2:8 KJV 1900

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

Whence comes error:

Following the world’s wisdom:

1 Corinthians 3:18–20 KJV 1900

Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.

And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.

1 Corinthians 2:6–8 KJV 1900

Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

The outcome of error:

1 Timothy 1:19 KJV 1900

Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:

Finally:

“…Grace be with thee. Amen.”

To continue in the ministry:

We Need God’s Grace Alway

To stay faithful though others depart from the truth of God’s words!

Good test:

1 Timothy 6:5 KJV 1900

Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.

1 Timothy 6:10 KJV 1900

For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

1 Timothy 6:20 KJV 1900

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
