2 Timothy 3:1 This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
Slide 4
“This know also”
God wants us to know what is coming.
Prophecy is proof of the greatness of our God!
Slide 5
“in the last days”
The time we live in!
Slide 6
“perilous times shall come”
Sin makes the perils!
Wickedness is a downhill path.
The outcome of puffing man up- “Man is the measure of all things”
Slide 7
2 Timothy 3:2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
Carefully consider the effect of one sin leading to another!
Slide 8
“For men shall be lovers of their own selves”
“Selfies”
Commanding characteristic of mankind before our Lord’s return.
Self-love brings perilous times.
Those that are in love with themselves do not benefit anyone but themselves!
Note how self-love leads to more wicked behavior.
“Me Generation”
Slide 9
“Covetous”
“Gains the name of the game!”
Can’t get enough, build enough!
Love of money overruling all other love!
Slide 10
1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Painful to pursue!
Slide 11
“boasters”
Bragging on self and self accomplishments!
Thinking self is the answer to the world.
Slide 12
“proud”
Pride is guaranteed to bring a fall as the novice warned of in
Slide 13
1 Timothy 3:6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
Pride is not of God:
Slide 14
1 John 2:16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
Pride stands in the way of a man getting saved:
Slide 15
Psalm 10:4 The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek afterGod: God is not in all his thoughts.
Men are proud of self, possessions, sins, and their intellect
Slide 16
“blasphemers”
Perfect description of men’s mouths today!
Slide 17
James 2:7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?
Characteristic of the antichrist:
Slide 18
Revelation 13:6
KJV 1900
And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
Slide 19
“disobedient to parents”
Major characteristic of children today!
Stubborn, rebellious!
Demanding children’s rights.
Children are just little adults in a child’s body:
Slide 20
Proverbs 22:15 Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; But the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
God does not agree!
Slide 21
“unthankful”
Not grateful to man or God!
Believe they are owed it all!
Opposite of what we are to be as children of God:
Slide 22
Colossians 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Slide 23
1 Thessalonians 5:18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
Slide 24
“unholy”
Wicked and filthy:
Slide 25
Jude 8 Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh, despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities.
Introduction: We are continuing our study on the Pastoral Epistles, 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus. We have seen the importance of studying the words of God, the importance of reminding, and shunning man’s empty and foolish questioning of scripture.
Now we are reminded of the stability, and responsibility, that is ours.
The Stability (2 Timothy 2:19)
“Nevertheless, the foundation of God standeth sure”
The foundation (cf. Eph.2:20; 1 Cor. 3:11)
The unbelief of man does not make the words of God empty.
Faith may be shaken
Not so the foundation of God.
“having this seal”
Seal of ownership and authority (cf. Esther 3:12)
We are “sealed” (see Eph. 1:13)
“the Lord knoweth them that are his” (cp. John 10:14)
Only 3 people know whether saved or not (God, me, the devil—Dr. Peter Ruckman)
This is the guarantee of my salvation.
2 seals (This one; and Hebrews 13:5)
This is my eternal security.
The Responsibility (2 Timothy 2:19ff)
“Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity”
Received the Savior, leave the paths of sin.
This is my duty to the Savior. (cf. Luke 17:10)
Reject false doctrines wicked behavior that appeals to the flesh.
Usefulness (2 Tim 2:20)
“a great house” (cf. 1 Tim. 3:!5; Heb 3:6)
What a truly great house is our Lord’s.
“vessels of gold…silver…honour”
“vessels” people believers
“vessels of…wood..earth…dishonour”
“vessels” people “make-believers”
“Make-believers” could be Christian that pretends things that are so are not so; and things that are so are not so”
What makes the difference?
Difference (2 Tim. 2:21)
“If a man therefore purge himself”
Personal behavior, choice
“from these”
These speaks to the false doctrine, and false teachers, that some have followed.
Separation required for purging. (Negative)
“he shall be a vessel unto honour…meet for the Master’s use”
Separated believer (Negative that brings about a positive.)
Studier of the Scripture (2 Timothy 3:15-17)
Obedient to the Lord’s Leadership (Example: Acts 16:6,7,9-10)
“meet” (cf. Gen. 2:18)
“sanctified”
Separated to the Savior (cf. Rom. 6:13,19)
“prepared unto every good work”
Preparation for service.
Run Away (2 Tim. 2:22)
“Flee also youthful lusts”
We are not to argue the point, nor stay in its neighborhood.
Run quickly like Joseph (cp. Gen. 29:7-12)
Required of a “vessel unto honor”
“Follow after”
We are going to walk one way or the other, choose the way of the Lord.
Don’t try to live in a vacuum (Replace the negative with the positive)
“put off” “put on” (Eph 4:22,25 with 4:24; 6:11)
Avoid (2 Tim. 2:23)
“foolish and unlearned questions”
Repeated warnings show danger and avoidance needed.
Example: Genesis 3:1
“knowing…gender strife”
Purpose is not what we are to be focused on.
Restrictions to Service (2 Tim. 2:24,25)
“must not strive”
Violation of vs. 23 will lead to violation of vs. 24
Deals with personal work, personal soul-winning or counseling. (NOT preaching)
Flip side in preaching (cf. Rom. 15:20; 1 Thess. 2:2; Tit. 1:13; 1 Tim. 2:20; 2Tim 4:2; Acts 9:29; 1 Cor 15:36; Phil 3:19; Rom 3:8)
Importance of “rightly dividing word” for right application.
Introduction: We enter now on obedience to the scripture that is changed in every so-called updated bible. This is the only place in Scripture where we are told to “study” God’s word. Who would want to remove that????
“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15)
“Study” a work in itself (Ecclesiastes 12:12)
Previous Timothy called to suffer, now he is called to his work.
The goal of every preacher (God’s approval) (Matthew 25:23; Galatians 1:10; 1 Thessalonians 2:4; Hebrews 11:5-6)
“a workman”
Preachers must accomplish their given work (Example John 21:21-22)
“needeth not to be ashamed”
In contrast to those who corrupt the words of God (2 Corinthians 2:17)
“rightly dividing the word of truth”
“Cut straight”
Note there are definite divisions (Things that are different are not the same)
Right division absolutely necessary to understand scripture.
Example: OT NT
Not in the business of inventing but in the business of delivering (2 Timothy 4:2)
“truth” (Psalms 119:160)
“But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.” (2 Timothy 2:16)
“shun” stay clear
“profane and vain babblings”
The teachings of men (Titus 3:9; 1 Timothy 1:4; 4:7; 6:20; Colossians 2:8)
“And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;” (2 Timothy 2:17)
“eat as doth a canker” (like cancer)
“Hymenaeus and Philetus;” (false teachers in the church)
Paul turned over to satan for the destruction of the flesh (1 Timothy 1:20)
Overthrow the faith of some (1 Timothy 1:18)
“Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.” (2 Timothy 2:18)
“concerning the truth have erred”
Erring from the truth is sin.
Note: they erred concerning “THE TRUTH”
The truth they had erred from:
“saying that the resurrection is past already”
Denial of the resurrection is a corrupting doctrine
The defense of which is found clearly and plainly in 1 Corinthians 15.
The doctrine of the resurrection is the foundation of the Gospel message (no resurrection no gospel.)
Corrupted the interpretation of the clear teaching of Scripture.
The first resurrection is physical (Rev. 20:2-5), future, is not the second resurrection (which is also future) (Rev. 20:11-15)
“The King is Coming” basically teaches a general resurrection.
“overthrow the faith of some”
To overthrow is to take by force.
The fruit of erring from the truth.
“Error is productive, it spreads like wildfire, destroys the faith of some”
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” (2 Timothy 2:19)
Greatly desiring to see thee, being mindful of thy tears, that I may be filled with joy;
Paul’s Heart’s Desire
“Greatly desiring to see thee”
• Paul’s desire speaks to what should be our desire:
• Desire to be with God’s people
• Prayers very personal.
• What is missing today?
• Early Churches’ Love for One Another.
Romans 1:11 KJV 1900
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end you may be established;
1 Thessalonians 2:17 KJV 1900
But we, brethren, being taken from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavoured the more abundantly to see your face with great desire.
• Why the Loss?
“being mindful of thy tears”
• Tears such as found in:
Acts 20:37–38 KJV 1900
And they all wept sore, and fell on Paul’s neck, and kissed him,
Sorrowing most of all for the words which he spake, that they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him unto the ship.
Timothy’s tears perhaps:
• Tears for the Difficulties Faced Alone
How to Face:
1 Kings 3:7–9 KJV 1900
And now, O Lord my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in.
And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
• This we certainly need to stay in the ministry
• Tears of the Absence of Close Fellowship
“that I may be filled with joy;”
At the Presence of Timothy:
• Joy of seeing his son in the ministry!
• Joy of ministering to Timothy once more!
• Joy for seeing the faithfulness of Timothy in the ministry!
• Paul Needed Such Encouragement:
2 Timothy 4:9 KJV 1900
Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:
2 Timothy 4:21 KJV 1900
Do thy diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth thee, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.
• So do we all!
2 Timothy 1:5 KJV 1900
When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
Remembering:
“When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee”
• Paul rejoiced at Timothy’s testimony of faith!
• Outward actions for the Savior shows our faith to others!
• Consider:
James 2:18 KJV 1900
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Important Because of Men
1 Samuel 16:7 KJV 1900
But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
Appearances Matter:
1 Thessalonians 5:22 KJV 1900
Abstain from all appearance of evil.
“unfeigned faith…which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice”
• Christian Heritage Rejoiced In
Acts 16:1–3 KJV 1900
Then came he to Derbe and Lystra: and, behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timotheus, the son of a certain woman, which was a Jewess, and believed; but his father was a Greek:
Which was well reported of by the brethren that were at Lystra and Iconium.
Him would Paul have to go forth with him; and took and circumcised him because of the Jews which were in those quarters: for they knew all that his father was a Greek.
3 John 4 KJV 1900
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
Rejoicing in the Fruit of Such Faith:
Philippians 2:19–20 KJV 1900
But I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.
For I have no man likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.
Conclusion: Paul reminds:
Serve God With a Pure Conscience.
Pray for Our Brothers in the Lord.
True Faith is Unfeigned and will Stand the Trials.
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,
Paul is the writer of the book:
“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God”
Declaration of His apostleship
Authority: “the will of God”
Must know our authority!
Matches Intro in Colossians:
Colossians 1:1 KJV 1900
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timotheus our brother,
“according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,”
Called our Hope:
Titus 1:2 KJV 1900
In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
Life in the Savior:
Colossians 3:3 KJV 1900
For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.
Jesus is my Hope:
Colossians 1:27 KJV 1900
To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:
My Hope is not a what but is a Who!
Jesus is my Life:
1 John 5:11–12 KJV 1900
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
1 John 5:20 KJV 1900
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
Jesus is the Gift and Giver of Eternal Life:
1 John 5:10–13 KJV 1900
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son.
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.
He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
Jesus Gave His Life:
John 10:11 KJV 1900
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
2 Timothy 1:2 KJV 1900
To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
“To Timothy, my dearly beloved son”
Addressed to Timothy, Paul’s son in the Faith!
1 Timothy 1:2 KJV 1900
Unto Timothy, my own son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.
“Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Grace: God Giving Me What I do Not Deserve.
Mercy: God Not Giving Me What I do Deserve
Peace: God Giving Me What is Beyond My Understanding
Philippians 4:7 KJV 1900
And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
“from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord”
God the Father the Source of all Blessings
God the Son the Access to all Blessings
2 Timothy 1:3 KJV 1900
I thank God, whom I serve from my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day;
“I thank God”
Thanksgivings Belong to God
Revelation 7:12 KJV 1900
Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honour, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen.
Paul’s Heritage:
“whom I serve from my forefathers”
Paul’s Conscience:
“with pure conscience”
Romans 9:1 KJV 1900
I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Ghost,
Acts 24:16 KJV 1900
And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
“that without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my prayers night and day”
Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
“laying up in store for themselves…”
Careful where you lay up those stores:
Matthew 6:19–21 KJV 1900
Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
There is one thing that is certain, ETERNITY:
Luke 12:33 KJV 1900
Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
We must not trust in uncertain riches!
Now consider:
“…a good foundation…”
Where is that foundation to be found, in the Lord:
Luke 6:48–49 KJV 1900
He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.
But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.
Where is that foundation to be found, in love:
Ephesians 3:17 KJV 1900
That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,
Where is that foundation to be found, in understanding and knowing the Lord:
Jeremiah 9:23–24 KJV 1900
Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, Neither let the mighty man glory in his might, Let not the rich man glory in his riches:
But let him that glorieth glory in this, That he understandeth and knoweth me, That I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: For in these things I delight, saith the Lord.
Next, consider the time that is important:
“…against the time to come…”
The time to come is ETERNITY:
1 Timothy 6:7 KJV 1900
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
Departure from TIME is certain:
James 1:9–11 KJV 1900
Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted:
But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
In ETERNITY comes the Judgment Seat of Christ:
2 Corinthians 5:10–11 KJV 1900
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.
Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
Then consider what we are to lay hold on:
“…that they man lay hold on…”
Hold on to our blessed hope:
Titus 2:13 KJV 1900
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
This is a LIVING hope:
1 Peter 1:3–5 KJV 1900
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Moving on we see:
1 Timothy 6:20 KJV 1900
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
Paul addresses the call:
“…O Timothy…”
The addressee is:
Paul speaks directly to Timothy!
Warning that has been delivered to him:
1 Timothy 6:11 KJV 1900
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
Order for direct action for Timothy to take:
2 Timothy 2:1 KJV 1900
Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.
Furthermore:
“…keep that which is committed to thy trust…”
Faithful stewardship is required:
1 Peter 4:10 KJV 1900
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
1 Corinthians 4:2 KJV 1900
Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
The TRUST given:
1 Timothy 1:11 KJV 1900
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.
The glorious gospel must be delivered in its purity:
Galatians 1:6–7 KJV 1900
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
The glorious gospel is SOUND Gospel:
2 Timothy 1:13–14 KJV 1900
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.
That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
The glorious gospel is a FAITHFUL Gospel:
Titus 1:9 KJV 1900
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
Staying true to the words of God is how we show our Love for the Savior:
John 14:23 KJV 1900
Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
What we are to avoid:
“…avoiding profane and vain babblings…”
Words of no profit:
“Babblings” are nothing but “hot air!”
For example:
1 Timothy 4:7 KJV 1900
But refuse profane and old wives’ fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.
How do we avoid:
2 Timothy 3:14–17 KJV 1900
But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
Furthermore:
“…and oppositions of science falsely so called…”
This is the world’s wisdom:
1 Corinthians 3:19 KJV 1900
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
Strikes at the heart of educated!
“science falsely so called”
Shows they called that science which is not science!
“…science..” missing from most new bibles, replaced by “knowledge”!
What’s their problem:
Dislike their “god” being called false!
Now look at:
1 Timothy 6:21 KJV 1900
Which some professing have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with thee. Amen.
Path to error:
“Which some professing have erred concerning the faith…”
Who have erred:
“Some” those that put science in front of God’s words!”
Where is the true knowledge:
Begins with “the fear of the Lord”:
Psalm 111:10 KJV 1900
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: A good understanding have all they that do his commandments: His praise endureth for ever.
Found in the Savior:
Colossians 2:3 KJV 1900
In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
No knowledge outside of the Savior:
Colossians 2:8 KJV 1900
Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.
Whence comes error:
Following the world’s wisdom:
1 Corinthians 3:18–20 KJV 1900
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.
And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
1 Corinthians 2:6–8 KJV 1900
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:
Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
The outcome of error:
1 Timothy 1:19 KJV 1900
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
Finally:
“…Grace be with thee. Amen.”
To continue in the ministry:
We Need God’s Grace Alway
To stay faithful though others depart from the truth of God’s words!
Good test:
1 Timothy 6:5 KJV 1900
Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself.
1 Timothy 6:10 KJV 1900
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
1 Timothy 6:20 KJV 1900
O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called:
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
“Fight the good fight of faith…”
Call for Action
2 Timothy 2:3 KJV 1900
Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.
Words That Show Control of Action
Fighting the Right Battle
1 Timothy 1:18 KJV 1900
This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare;
Not a Self-Serving Battle
1 Corinthians 9:25–26 KJV 1900
And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertainly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air:
Requires Right Weapons of Warfare
2 Corinthians 6:7 KJV 1900
By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,
Worthless Weapons
2 Corinthians 10:3–5 KJV 1900
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
